Police detain Elder Zhang Chunlei 14 days; escalate “routine” home searches to confiscating church members' property

(Guiyang, Guizhou Province—March 19, 2021) On March 17, Guiyang police officers notified Yang Aiqin, wife of Elder Zhang Chunlei of Ren’ai Reformed Church, to be watching for the official notice of Elder Zhang's 14-day administrative detention. Police also asked Ms. Yang to bring clothes to their station the next day for Elder Zhang, Chen Jianguo, Li Jinzhi and Li Lin, church members recently detained for attending a retreat.

On the morning of March 18, when Ms. Yang Aiqing delivered clothes for the four church members to the police station, officers and joint law enforcement personnel requested that she take them to her home for a routine search. The search, however, escalated to police confiscating her computer, cell phone, and several other valuable items.

That same afternoon, police searched the home of another of the four detained congregants, Chen Jianguo, and confiscated his computer and other electronic products as well. Officers also searched the home of Huang Qingxi, a Christian from Anshun, detained at Yan’an Middle Road Police Station for 26 hours. Police confiscated her computer and numerous documents.

On the evening of March 18, police searched the home of Zhou Xun, also a member of Ren’ai Reform Church, and confiscated her computer. Ms. Zhou, disabled, suffers from cancer and has undergone a kidney transplant. The next morning (March 19), police summoned Li Jinzhi’s daughter to their station for questioning. Reporter did not know if police conducted a "routine" search on her home.
