(Hong Kong—Sept.  09, 2020) Chinese Coast Guard officials arrest 12 young Hong Kong protesters attempting to flee to Taiwan.

Chinese police accused some of the 12 arrested on August 23 of crimes punishable by life in prison. Lu Siwei, a Chinese lawyer for one of the young people, quoted a police officer to report that protestors were charged “organizing others to cross national borders illegally.” The Chinese government considers this indictment as more severe than “illegally crossing national borders,” the reported charge.

Lawyer Lu reports that after registering at Shenzhen Yantian Detention Center, authorities prohibited him from entering and visiting with his client. Those detained have appointed Chinese lawyers to represent them, but officials have barred attorneys from meeting with them.
