‘You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies…And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle…’ (1 Samuel 17:45a,47 NLT)

When David met the giant warrior Goliath, he had confidence that he would win the fight, even though humanly speaking it looked impossible. Yet his confidence did not come from his own strength, but from the power of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies; and he knew that it was the Lord’s battle, not his own.

Tomorrow we will join thousands around the world in marking the Global Day of Prayer for Burma. The country has seen decades of turmoil, and since 2012 there has been a dramatic rise in religious intolerance.

A campaign of militant Buddhist nationalism has emerged which preaches hatred, principally of Muslims, but also threatens Christians and other non-Buddhists, and indeed affects Buddhists who attempt to oppose it. Hate speech and discrimination are widespread, affecting daily needs such as access to housing, education and employment. Sporadic violence against Muslims has occurred throughout the country since 2012.

Join us tomorrow in prayer for Burma. Though the challenges facing the country seem enormous, remember that our God is bigger still, and the battle is not ours but God’s.

In summary, please pray:

  • For a change of heart for the government and for the Burma Army, that they would work for peace and tolerance.
  • For an end to violence against religious and ethnic groups.
  • For comfort and strength for everyone who has lost loved ones in the years-long conflict between the government and the ethnic groups.
  • That love, hope and reconciliation will grow among all people in Burma.
