(Suining, Sichuan—Feb. 21, 2020) Chinese human rights activist Chen Wei was released yesterday after serving a lengthy prison term.

Before his arrest, he organized student protests during the 1989 democracy movement and continued to champion human rights in China. He has been imprisoned three times for his work, with this last instance lasting nine years.

In 2016, his mother passed away, and he was not allowed to attend her funeral.

Shortly after the death, his twin brother, Chen Bing, was jailed for three-and-a-half years. Chen Bing is also a democracy proponent and was arrested for helping create a liquor to commemorate the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

The twins turned 51 today.
