“Please convey my gratitude to all the brothers and friends who help us. We have no words to thank you enough. You are invaluable instruments in our lives, families, and ministries. We are so grateful and deeply appreciate all your support during these dark and difficult times. I just want you to know that we love you very much in Jesus Christ. Thank you so much.” - Pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo

Today marks five years since the peaceful protests of 11 July 2021, when spontaneous protests broke out across Cuba as people took to the streets calling for change. What began as a cry over shortages of food and medicine became a call for freedom.

The response from the Cuban government was swift and harsh: hundreds were arrested, including Pastor Lorenzo, and many are still behind bars today.

The situation in the country remains difficult, with shortages of food and medicine only having grown more severe in recent years.

In the midst of it all, religious leaders continue to serve their communities despite growing restrictions and a hostile atmosphere. Some face harassment, threats, and even detention simply for speaking out or for meeting people’s needs.

Protestant Pastor Alexis Padrón Lorenzo, the leader of the Communion in Faith Church is one such pastor. He denounced the suffering of the people and expressed opposition to the communist system. He was detained on 10 June and remains detained incommunicado (without contact).

There are some encouraging signs. Seventeen-year-old Jonathan David Muir Burgos has been released after more than three months in a maximum-security prison for adults for allegedly taking part in peaceful protests. But he is still under house arrest – and many others, including young people, remain detained.

As we remember this anniversary, we’re reminded that this isn’t the end of the story. Across Cuba, churches and faith communities are still standing in the gap – and as Pastor Lorenzo’s message shows us, your prayers are a vital part of that story too.

Please pray:

  • For those still imprisoned after the 11 July protests, that they will be released. And for all who may feel vulnerable around this anniversary.
  • For young people in Cuba, especially those detained or facing an uncertain future.
  • There have been reports of physical and verbal abuse of children in schools because of their religious beliefs. Pray for their healing and protection.
  • For Pastor Lorenzo, Pastor Alexis and many other religious leaders who continue to work under pressure, that they would know God’s protection and courage.
  • For Jonathan, as he processes the traumatising experience of the last few months, as he adjusts to life under house arrest, and for his full freedom without condition.
  • For Cuba as a whole. Pray that rather than repressing those who speak out about or try to address the serious needs across the island, the authorities would listen and seek ways to support those leading initiatives at every level to feed the hungry, house the unhoused, and heal the sick.
  • Pray for a peaceful, structured transition to democracy and a Cuba where the rights of all are upheld.
