The Voice of the Martyrs

A Choice That Cost Her Everything
In Anu Dani’s mind, following Christ was an obvious choice: He had shown himself to be the true God when her 3-year-old daughter was healed from sickness after Christians prayed for her. Although Anu had spent her life in Nepal fully devoted to the Hindu god Shiva (known as the Destroyer), Christ had done what doctors and Hindu gods could not. Her family, however, did not see her new devotion to Christ the same way. “It is not necessary that you go to church, because your daughter is already healed,” they argued.

Anu’s husband, Prakesh, followed her to church but returned to Hindu worship when pressured by family. She considered whether her husband and extended family might be right. “In my mind I was struggling,” Anu recalled. “After my daughter got healed, shall I not follow? I said, ‘No, I will follow,’ and I had joy in my heart. I thought if I have found peace in Jesus, then I am ready to leave all my family, no problem. Therefore, I left everything behind and decided to follow Jesus.”

When Anu’s parents and siblings saw that they could not convince her, they kicked her out of the family home. Prakesh later joined her, ready to follow Christ as well. Locals would not share food or allow the couple to use the well, forcing them to travel a long distance just to get water. Anu and Prakesh could not attend family or community events, and their daughter would not be permitted to attend the local school.

But the loss and isolation didn’t dampen their faith. “I continued to keep my faith even though it was challenging and the persecution situations were there,” Anu said.

“It is prayer to God that has made me strong. Now, whatever happens, even if I have to leave the village again, I am not going to leave Christ.”
