Join us as we Walk with the Persecuted Faithful. This week: A 22-year-old student has been missing for 62 days in China. Schoolchildren are required to perform songs promoting state ideology. Multiple house churches have been closed by authorities.

Notable progress: David Lin, imprisoned for 18 years due to his faith, has been freed. Pope Leo signals readiness to hear appeals from China's underground church network.

Lead Story: A Chinese Student Studying Abroad has Lost All Contact with the World After Returning Home, Suspected of “Endangering National Security”

(Changsha, Hunan) Zhang Yadi, a 22-year-old anthropology scholar and pro-Tibet advocate known online as Tara (@TaraFreesoul), has been incommunicado for 62 days since her July 30 disappearance in Yunnan. The multilingual activist, set to begin a master's at London's SOAS University this month, faces suspected "endangering national security" charges for promoting minority rights and Han-Tibetan dialogue.

Her mother received inconsistent updates amid surveillance fears, while human rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong was briefly detained September 16 for aiding the family. Global outcry mounts, demanding her release and due process.

Story #2: China's Classrooms Weaponized

Shanghai's Baoshan District kicked off the school year with mandatory "anti-cult" propaganda, embedding ideological lessons in songs, quizzes, and films for thousands of students. Framed as safety education, activities like clapping chants and role-plays draw sharp criticism from educators and parents for simplifying complex faiths into "hostile targets" and fostering intolerance.

With "cult" definitions vague enough to target dissent, experts warn this blurs education and control, planting seeds of fear in young minds amid China's tightening grip on belief.

Story #3: Zion Church In Shuangliao City, Jilin, China Is Banned

In a stark escalation of China's religious controls, authorities in Shuangliao City, Jilin Province, banned Zion Church on June 24, 2025, labeling it an illegal social organization for operating without registration. The Civil Affairs Bureau invoked national regulations to halt its activities, reflecting Beijing's intensified campaign against unregistered house churches.

This move underscores ongoing suppression of Christian groups outside state-sanctioned bodies like the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. ChinaAid condemns the action as a violation of fundamental religious freedoms, urging global attention to protect persecuted believers amid rising crackdowns.

Story #4: The Missionary Who Converted a Prison

(California) After 18 harrowing years in a Chinese prison for preaching the Gospel, Taiwanese-American missionary David Lin is free—and preaching again. Arrested in 2006 on trumped-up fraud charges for his underground ministry, Lin converted 90% of his inmates, translated the Bible, and endured malnutrition and isolation.

Released via a secret U.S.-China prisoner swap on September 14, 2024, the frail but faithful 70-year-old reunited with his family in San Antonio. Now launching Great King Ministry, Lin's unyielding faith spotlights Beijing's crackdown on religious freedom.

Story #5: Pope Leo XIV Speaks Publicly About China for the First Time

Pope Leo XIV has publicly addressed China's treatment of Catholics for the first time, signaling openness to future policy shifts while maintaining the Vatican's 2018 bishop appointment agreement with Beijing until 2028. In an interview for a new book, the pontiff admitted lacking a clear strategy but emphasized ongoing dialogues with Chinese individuals to better understand the Church's mission amid cultural and political challenges.

China oppresses underground Catholics, including unrecognized bishops and pressures priests, and forces "Sinicization." This cautious stance offers hope to persecuted believers enduring surveillance and secret worship.
