Vietnam (International Christian Concern) – After five days of arrest, interrogation and forced work, four Montagnard Protestant church members were released from jail in the Cu M’gar District, Dak Lai Region, Vietnam.
Montagnard is the umbrella term for the indigenous people from the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Many Montagnard families in Dak Lai are Protestant believers who are not members of any of the state-sanctioned religious groups allowed in Communist run Vietnam.
Radio Free Asia reported that the four Christians in Dak Lai, when they were released, were told by police authorities to stop practicing their Christian faith. But the four Montagnards said that they will continue to practice their religion.
The group had even extended an invitation to current Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong (from the nation’s Communist Party) to attend one of their church services to observe their faith and practices. This continues the ongoing struggle for many indigenous Montagnards in the Central Highlands, many of whom have converted to Christianity, to practice their faith and gather to worship.
ICC welcomes the release of these four indigenous believers, and we are encouraged by the courage and steadfastness of these Vietnamese Christians. We will continue to find ways to advocate for and support these Montagnard believers to freely live out their faith.
