Indonesia (International Christian Concern) – In March, ICC reported on how the leading Muslim clerical body in Indonesia declared an interfaith marriage between a Catholic man and a Muslim woman invalid. The decision was based on a loose interpretation of a 1974 law and was met with swift backlash from human rights groups.

Following the ruling, which occurred just days after their wedding ceremony, the couple applied to the Surabaya District Court to certify their marriage. After the deliberation of a judge, the two obtained permission to register their marriage. This decision set a precedent for interfaith marriages going forward, overturning the ruling of the Muslim court.

The Muslim court still rejects this decision, but the decision of the district court takes higher precedence.

Indonesian lawmakers and policymakers have commended the decision of the district court, especially given Indonesia’s recent push towards interreligious dialogue and respect.

HOW TO PRAY: Pray for greater freedom for religious minorities in Indonesia. Praise God for this step in the right direction. Pray for protection for interfaith families in Indonesia.
