Myanmar (International Christian Concern) – As the Burmese Army (Tatmadaw) continues to fight opposition in various states in Myanmar, more churches in Christian-majority Chin state fall victims to the armed attacks followed by looting by the Tatmadaw soldiers.
The Chindwin reports that on November 28, the Tatmadaw fired heavy and small weapons targeting the St. Michael Christian Church and its convent run by the church in Kanpalet, Chin State, forcing the priests and sisters at the convent to flee the town and hide in a safer area.
The following day, Tatmadaw soldiers looted the convent building and stole many valuables, including cash worth 50 lakhs (USD $4,800), medical supplies, bags of rice, computer, and accessories.
A local pastor who requests not to mention his name told Chindwin that most Christian churches in Kanpalet have experienced at least once or twice shooting by the junta troops, with some churches bombarded by RPG, causing massive damage.
Nearly the entire property at Emmanuel Baptist Church in the town has also been looted by the Tatmadaw, according to a member of the church.
Chin state is a stronghold of the resistance groups currently battling the junta. Over 90% of the population is Christian. For this reason, the Tatmadaw has transported several brigades to this west state bordering Bangladesh and India.
In late October, Chin National Front officials and local resistance fighters confirmed with Voice of America that large numbers of junta troops are now stationed in Hakha, Chin’s capital, and in the neighboring Mindat, Kanpetlet, Falam, and Thantlang townships for military operations.
HOW TO PRAY: Pray for protection for churches in Myanmar’s Chin State. Pray for restoration for all of the damaged goods in this attack. Pray for the Tatmadaw to be held accountable.
