Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and world leaders have agreed that North Korea is the most dangerous place for Christians to practice their religion. According to Open Doors’ World Watch List, North Korea ranks at top of the list for the seventeenth consecutive year. Christians in North Korea are vulnerable to severe persecution from state authorities, non-Christian friends, neighbors, and even their families.

One of the main issues that fuels persecution against Christians in North Korea is the indoctrination of idolizing the ruling Kim family. This form of manipulation makes non-believers view Christians as a threat to their society or governmental system, who must be eliminated. The school system teaches children to report their own parents for any religious activity other than worshipping the Kim clan. Therefore, many parents choose to hide their Christian faith from their own children and avoid sharing the Gospel until they are old enough to understand. Furthermore, meeting other Christians in North Korea for fellowship is almost impossible, unless it is done in secrecy.

As part of International Christian Concern’s (ICC) advocacy efforts to help Christians in North Korea, ICC signed a joint letter that was sent to President Moon of South Korea, encouraging dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The letter supports and promotes an inter-Korean dialogue where many issues should be discussed, including the abuses on Christians when violating their religious freedom, the cooperation of the UN’s human rights recommendations, and the use of humanitarian aid. The letter also provides a list of recommendations as to how many of these problems can be solved and the impact they would bring to society.

In the last few years, ICC has also had the opportunity to learn about individual cases of persecution in North Korea. In addition to advocating for Christians in North Korea, we have created and implemented various projects, including Gospel broadcasting and defector assistance. However, there is still a lot that can be done to help Christians in North Korea.

Please pray for North Korea as many innocent victims suffer at the hands of the tyrannical government. Pray for North Korea’s leaders so that they can learn to fear God and respect His people. Remember to also pray for the strength and endurance of the Church in North Korea, so that God can give them the courage that they need. Finally, pray for the dialogue between President Moon and Kim Jong Un, so that it can be a positive meeting where many issues can be resolved.
