Baghdad's Churches Close Due to Low Attendance

Date:  September 8, 2017

Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, recently saw the closure of eight churches. Although ISIS never occupied Baghdad, the capital has still experienced targeted attacks over the years, resulting in many Christians leaving for safer places. Due to low attendance, the regional authority of the Catholic Church decided to permanently shut down eight churches. “While such decision [sic] seemed to have made a lot of sense, it leaves little space for optimism as far as Iraq’s Christian community is involved.”

  • Pray for Iraq as so many Christians have fled their homes and the country altogether.
  • Pray for Christian witnesses to remain even after the devastating events of ISIS occupation.
  • Pray for those who are left to be able to rebuild their homes and lives.
